Wieland Group, a German supplier of copper and copper-alloy products, has acquired U.S. metal recycling specialist Totall Metal Recycling, aiming to expand its recycling capabilities and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
The deal between Wieland and Totall Metal Recycling was finalized on April 29. In addition to a reduced carbon footprint, Wieland also aims to enhance its capabilities for closed-loop business models with customers.
Totall Metal Recycling, formed in 1993, serves industrial clients throughout North America. The company offers a range of recycling services and processes approximately 100,000 tons of scrap metal each year. This includes copper scrap, electronic scrap, lead, zinc, aluminum and several other metal types.
Wieland is a family-owned business with a 200-year history, specializing in copper and brass products, including tubes for transcritical CO2 (R744) refrigeration applications. One of its most popular products is the K65 copper-alloy pipes.
“The integration of Totall Metal Recycling’s experienced team and partner network expands our recycling capabilities and accelerates the execution of our sustainability and recycling strategy, especially in terms of material processing capabilities,” said Erwin Mayr, CEO of Wieland, in a statement.
“I am happy that the leadership team will remain in place, continue to drive the successful development of Totall Metal Recycling, and also contribute to Wieland’s recycling agenda overall.
Furthermore, this acquisition once more underscores Wieland’s commitment to continue to invest and grow in North America,” Mayr added.
The acquisition is part of a wider strategy towards net-zero. In March 2021, Wieland committed to the Science Based Targets initiative and has defined ambitious mid-term climate targets to be realized by 2030. The company aims to achieve net-zero by 2045 at the latest.
Totall Metal Recycling is not Wieland’s only acquisition in the last couple years. In August 2021, Wieland acquired The Miller Company, a U.S.-based distributor of a wide range of copper-based alloy strips, serving customers across the States.
In March this year, Wieland acquired Italian Heat Exchanger Manufacturer Provides Metalmeccanica with an aim to jointly develop “efficient [refrigeration] systems with more compact designs and achieve a reduction in the refrigerants required.”
